After an apprenticeship in a bank Anton Mahringer studied in Stuttgart from 1934 to 1930. His teachers were A. Waldschmidt and A. Kolig. In 1927 the artist visited Milano, Florence, Orvieto, Rome, Naples and Palermo. Because of his teacher Anton Kolig he went to Nötsch in Austria in 1928 where he met F. Wiegele. The three of them were to become members the "Nötscher Kreis".
Together with several other students of A. Kolig Anton Mahringer created those frescoes in the Landhaus in Klagenfurt which were to be removed in 1938.
In 1931 the artist moved to the Gailtal (Carinthia). In the thirties he travelled to Dalmatia and Germany. Later he went on study trips to Ischia, Yugoslavia, Israel, the South of France, Turkey and to the Lebanon. Ineligible for military service, Anton Mahringer worked as an art teacher in Hermagor (Carinthia) during World War II.
The artist was a member of the Vienna Secession and participated in several exhibitions, for instance in the gallery Wuerthle in Vienna or in the gallery Welz in Salzburg. In 1948 he received the Austrian State Prize.
Anton Mahringer mainly painted the landscape of the Gailtal.
