Herbert Boeckl was born in 1894 in Klagenfurt (Austria).After he was not admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Boeckl bgeann the study of architecture at Vienna's Technical University. In addition, Adolf Loos was his private tutor. Between 1914 and 1918, while serving in the army, he started painting as an autodidact artist. 1921/22 he studied in Berlin, travels to Paris and Palermo followed. Between 1926 and 1928 he lived in Carinthia, but he returned to Vienna and stayed there for the following years. Between 1935 and 1966 he held several teaching posts at its Academy of Fine Arts as well the principalship in 1945/1946 and again from 1962 to 1965. In 1952 he joined the Vienna Secession. In the following years he travelled to Spain, Greece and Egypt. Herbert Boeckl died in 1966 in Vienna.
He mainly painted landscapes, portraits and still lives but also was interested in religious motifs. Characteristically, colour is the central element of expression in his paintings.
