Koloman Moser was born on the 30 March 1868, in Vienna. He was a portrait, genre and landscape painter as well as a graphic designer. From 1886 on he studied under Franz Rumpler and Christian Griepenkerl at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He then was a disciple of J. M. Trenkwald and Franz Matsch at the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule. Koloman Moser himself became professor at the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule in 1900. He was a founding member of the Vienna Secession in 1897 but left the association in 1905 together with the so-called "Klimt-Group".
The artist travelled to Germany, Italy and France. After he had arranged the Beethoven exhibition in 1902 he had considerable influence on further exhibitions shown at the Secession. Together with Josef Hoffmann and Fr. Wärndorfer he founded the "Wiener Werkstätten" in 1903. The painter died on the 18 October 1918, in Vienna.
