From 1861 to 1868 Robert Russ attended Albert Zimmermann's class on landscape painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and taught in place of his teacher from 1870 to 1871. The artist went on numerous journeys to Italy, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium. He typically paints scenes of the Austrian Alps. He regularly participated in exhibitions, for instance in the Künstlerhaus Vienna. In addition he received several tributes. From 1870 to 1871 lectured on landscape painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts whose honorary member he became in 1888. Robert Russ exhibited five paintings at the World Exhibition of 1873. In the 1880s numerous museums ordered paintings and Robert Russ had international success. He painted, for instance, landscapes for the Imperial Theatre and the Museum of Natural History. Robert Russ was befriended with Emil-Jakob Schindler, Eugen Jettel and Rudolf Ribarz. His early landscape paintings resemble those of Schindler and Jettel. Russ painted in South Tyrol, Italy and in the Austrian alpine lands. His paintings capture the change of colours that goes along with the different times of the day and seasons of the year. He was called "master of the lighting effect" by his contemporaries.
